Both Pilates rings and resistance bands are small, inexpensive, and portable — which is why they get compared a lot. But they work quite differently and suit different purposes. Here’s what you actually need to know to choose between them.
What they are
A Pilates ring (also called a magic circle) is a small, flexible metal or plastic circle with padded handles on either side. You squeeze it — between your thighs, palms, or hands — to create resistance. It provides a specific, contained kind of resistance designed to work within classical Pilates exercises.
Resistance bands are long, elastic loops or flat bands that stretch to provide resistance. They come in different resistance levels, usually colour-coded from light to heavy, and can be used across a much wider range of exercises.
What each is best for
The Pilates ring targets:
- Inner thighs and adductors (the classic thigh squeeze)
- Pelvic floor activation
- Chest and arm work in Pilates sequences
- Core exercises where a gentle added resistance helps you engage more deeply
Resistance bands are better suited to:
- Lower body work — squats, lunges, clamshells, glute bridges
- Upper body pulling and pressing exercises
- Shoulder rehab and mobility work
- Any exercise where you need variable tension through the full range of movement
The key difference
The Pilates ring is a Pilates-specific tool. It’s designed to work within classical Pilates exercises and doesn’t translate especially well outside that context. If you’re doing regular mat Pilates, it’s a useful addition to the kit you might already own.
Resistance bands are more general-purpose. They’re used across Pilates, physiotherapy, yoga, and general strength training. If you can only buy one, resistance bands give you more versatility.
Which should you choose?
If you’re new to both and want to add resistance to your workouts, start with resistance bands. They’ll serve you across different types of exercise and you’ll get more out of them.
If you’re already doing Pilates regularly and want something that works specifically within those sessions, a Pilates ring is worth having. They’re not expensive, take up no space, and there are exercises where a ring adds something bands simply don’t.
Many people end up owning both. The combined cost is still low compared to most fitness equipment, and they genuinely serve different purposes.
Cost
Neither is a significant outlay. A basic resistance band set typically costs around £10–£20. A Pilates ring is usually £15–£25. If you’re genuinely unsure which would suit you better, trying both isn’t a big financial risk.
